getting around

Bowen Island is a small island accessible by public transit from downtown Vancouver. While most opt to bring a car to get around, there are some alternative ways if you’re in the mood for an adventure. Consider some of the many options below if you want to test out that old adage that ‘life is about the journey, not the destination’. (Psst 🤫—in any case, it’s useful to know about these because there are no taxis or uber's on the island).

cycling & eBikes

With its many short climbs, none longer than 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi), the prospect of cycling on Bowen looks manageable on paper. But, unsuspecting cyclists will learn the hard way why Bowen is called “interval island.” The island is infamously punishing for any but the most accomplished cyclists with the right gear. Consider instead bringing or renting an eBike to smooth out the hills and save your legs. For those who like to suffer, bring your road and take on the Bowen Island Man or one of the many other, less ambitious and incredibly scenic road and gravel routes. If you do bring a bike, make sure to pack a repair kit. If you get into trouble you can call Bowen eBikes for an assist. While they do charge you for a pickup, or parts on the road, they will do their best to help and get you back on the ferry.

scooter rental

Whether you need a scooter for a few hours, or a few days, ZoomZoom can accommodate your needs. Their Yamaha Vino scooters will allow you to explore the island. All bookings are by reservation only. We are located in a residential area and are not licenced for walk-ins. You can book online up to 12 hours before the rental time. To check availability the same day you want to ride, please call or text 604-725-9207. Same day bookings may be possible if there is availability or a cancellation. All riders must be 19+ years of age, have a (non-L) licence, and must be VERY experienced at riding bicycles.

low speed vehicle (LSV)

A fun(ny) way to get around is by renting a low speed vehicle (LSV)—which looks like a golf cart—from Bowen eBikes. LSV’s are different from Golf Carts, in that they have mirrors, signal lights, licence plates, and seatbelts. They are road legal, and are great for groups of 4 looking to enjoy the day in an unconventional way. Operators only need a class 5 drivers license to drive them. The eBike shop requires that you are 25 or older, and that you have your own vehicle insurance. It’s a good idea to book in advance.

hitchhiking

Hitchhiking on Bowen is very common. There are designated “LIFT stop” pickup locations with signage. Bowen LIFT helps to make it easy for riders to connect with drivers. Use their app, or wait by one of their green thumbs up signs (pictured to the left).
