cycling on bowen

I had to make this one of my first pages on Discover Bowen because I’m a passionate cyclist of every variety, and I really believe it’s one of the best ways to discover the island. But don’t get too excited—you’re going to have to bring or rent an e-bike or else prepare to work really, really hard to discover Bowen on a bike. If you were to ride every road on Bowen (approximately 130km), you’d have to climb a whopping 4,200m. To put that in perspective, that’s 4.2km straight up. The stories of people attempting that feat via the Bowen Island Man challenge are many, and both beautiful and funny (see below). But even an adventurer with more modest aims will find plenty of amazing spots to explore. And it does help that you can pepper your ride with stops at local cideries, distilleries, and farm shops that are scattered around the island waiting to be discovered by those ‘in the know.’ And in fairer weather, it’s always a good idea to stop at one of Bowen’s many beaches to cool down and take in the coastal beauty. Contact me up directly if you’re a cyclist and want some advice about routes and lesser known gravel tracks and MTB trails.

Bowen Island Man Challange

Dubbed Vancouver’s Awful New Classic and the subject of much hype on the cycling scene and consternation locally, the popularization of “The Bowen Island Man” cycling challenge by former resident Christophe Haas has put “Interval Island” on the map for cyclists who like to suffer.

The Bowen Island Man, some call it the “worst ride of your life.” A 128km, 4,000m route covering all of the main roads across the small island of Bowen Island, a short ferry ride off the coast of Vancouver, BC. In the summer of 2025, Stef Curtis took it on. And when one lap wasn’t enough, he turned around and rode it all again—in reverse.

Finished it, and then rode home. 344km. 9,359m of elevation. 26 hours 48 minutes on a bike. A legendary effort by any measure.
